Hi everyone! My name is Sarina Divan, and I’m 17 years old. I’m a senior at Williamsville East High School, just outside of Buffalo, New York.
I first heard about Girl Up during my sophomore year of high school, and I immediately fell in love with the campaign. My favorite part about Girl Up is that, as a by girls-for girls campaign, it helps every girl get involved in the movement for gender equality.
During my junior year, I started a Girl Up Club at my school. We raised awareness around our school for International Day of the Girl; hosted a self-defense class fundraiser for SchoolCycle; held a He Named Me Malala screening; volunteered at a Girls on the Run 5K; and look forward to participating in more activities! Along with the other Girl Up leaders across Upstate New York, I also helped strengthen the Upstate New York Coalition.
Outside of Girl Up, other activities that I am involved in include Girl Scouts, Future Business Leaders of America, and Model UN. I am the treasurer for the Class of 2017 at my school, and I am a NeXt Correspondent for The Buffalo News.
In my free time, you can usually find me spending time with my friends, wasting time on social media, and binge-watching Shonda Rhimes’ shows.
I think it’s so important to advocate for girls’ and women’s rights. Girl Up has not only helped me get involved in helping adolescent girls around the world, but has helped me feel empowered too. I am so honored and excited to be a 2016-2017 Teen Advisor, and I can’t wait to get more involved in this amazing campaign!
