Hello! My name is Riya, and I am a senior at Hillsdale High School. I currently live in the Bay Area of San Mateo, California.
Last year, I started a Girl Up Club at my school. We not only had a lot of fun, but we also held a lot of successful events. Some of our biggest fundraisers included a mother-daughter Zumba class, a screening of “Girl Rising”, and a photo shoot.
One of my passions is playing the baritone saxophone because it allows me to express myself through the most daring and interesting style of music: jazz.
I am also a co-captain and a trial attorney on the Hillsdale High School mock trial team, which has challenged and improved my public speaking skills.
My biggest “she-roes” are my sisters. As the middle child, I am able to quietly observe the bravery and kindness of my wonderful sisters. They have taught me how to love, appreciate and have a ton of fun with everything I do.
When I was younger, adults would often ask me what I wanted to be when I grow up. I would respond confidently declaring, “I am going to be the President of the United States of America.”
After receiving an adoring smile, I would be informed that, “We have never had a female President,” to which I would proclaim, “Just wait a few years!”
Even though some of our dreams may seem so out of reach that they sound impossible at first, I have personally been inspired by Girl Up to keep my spirit up and dare to defy the odds because no dream is too big.
I am so honored to be a Co-chair for this year’s Teen Advisory Board. The experiences that I have had as a Teen Advisor have been some of the most meaningful. My fellow Teen Advisors have become a second family to me, and I look forward to gaining more sisters in the coming year.
