Rebecca Fairweather

大家好! My name is Rebecca Fairweather. I’m a seventeen-year-old rising senior at Forest Hills High School in Queens, New York.

I am so excited to be serving as the Co-Chair for the Teen Advisor Class of 2019 to 2020. I joined my Girl Up Club almost four years ago, and have since been serving as the Co-President. We have helped raise over $10,000 for Girl Up and gathered over 500 members since we started. This year we’ve hosted multiple fundraisers, most famously our movie nights, holiday and Mother’s Day sale. We’ve also celebrated women by delivering roses on International Women’s Day and International Day of the Girl. I also serve as the Co-Lead of the New York City Coalition where we’ve hosted many events to reach out to the community and inform them of the struggle girls not only face in the US but globally. We’ve shown them that uniting girls really does change the world and have hosted numerous in-district meetings with U.S. Senator Gillibrand and U.S. Senator Schumer. Throughout my tenure as a Teen Advisor last year, I was humbled to have seen the true talent, knowledge, and passion of the Teen Advisor class. The Teen Advisors are the embodiment of everything girl up stands for: community and leadership.

When I am not advocating for Girl Up, I’m usually doing musical theater or advocating for legislation on the local level in New York. I was Assistant Director of my schools’ production of ‘Catch Me if You Can’ which allowed me to learn new skills on leadership and mentoring. It definitely brought me outside my comfort zone and I cannot wait to see what these new tools blossom into. I am also the Organizational Outreach of the Youth Progressive Policy Group in NYC. This year we are advocating for Climate Change legislation and lowering the voting age to 17 in New York.

To be leading the Teen Advisor class this year is beyond belief and I truly can’t wait to take these amazing girls to new heights. Let’s shatter that glass ceiling!
