Hi! My name is Maitri Khera, I’m 16 and a rising junior at Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland.
I’ve always believed in equality, as it’s something I’ve always heard about and learned about. When I got older, though, I was able to understand the struggles that girls around the world face more clearly by reading articles and talking to people who knew more about the subject. Learning about what other women experience really made me want to do something about it. For the past four years, I’ve worked with a local organization called GirlsUP, that encourages self love and self confidence in young girls. Being a teen board member has allowed me to participate in events that promote confidence, such as a summer camp and other activities throughout the year, and community service. By helping out and talking with girls my age, I’ve been able to learn a lot more about the struggles that women face, both here and all around the world.
I also love reading, writing, art, fashion, and music. I love finding new ways to combine my favorite music with my art and writing. I really enjoy designing clothes and writing short stories. Anyone who knows me knows that they can find me blasting Taylor Swift and creating something. I’m super excited to be a Girl Up Teen Advisor, and to learn from all the wonderful people I meet and things I get to do. This is an experience I’ve been looking forward to, and I can’t wait to use this privilege to help others.
