Hi! My name is Janet, and I’m a senior at Paschal High School in Fort Worth, Texas. I have used high school as a time to explore my interests, which led me to become more involved in advocacy and service. As a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholar I have been allowed to explore different interests of mine through summer enrichment programs. Before freshman year, I attended my first summer program and it was truly life changing! CivicWeek’s course on Human Rights and Urban Affairs sparked a lot of questions, so I became eager to learn more about social justice issues. In my experience, social justice issues weren’t talked about enough in public schools, so I made it my goal to do a bit of advocacy in my community. I did a lot of research on my own and familiarized myself with organizations that empower and raise awareness, which allowed me to find Girl Up!
I have been involved in my community through different clubs; I am currently secretary of my school’s Key Club, co-president of the Charity Water club at my school, and I hold the Community Outreach/Membership office in the Fort Worth Sister Cities Youth International Board. All of these organizations combine elements of service and enable the participants to connect with the world on a different level. My passion to learn more about different cultures grew when I visited Indonesia. I realized that even in the most rural areas education was something communities lacked, but needed in order to perform at their greatest potential. Allowing girls to receive an education can open so many doors, and I look forward to expanding the Girl Up movement and helping girls receive an education around the world!
Aside from learning about cultures, traveling, and service, I play the bassoon and I was part of my school’s marching band. I am also interning this fall with Wendy Davis, my state senator. I’m interested in learning about policies and their impact, so I hope to study public policy or international affairs in college. Between now and college I hope to share my knowledge and passion with girls and women across the globe. I’m thrilled to be working with an organization that empowers girls to make a change in the world, and together we will make this movement even more extraordinary!
