Hello! My name is Fiona Adams and I am a senior at West High School in Madison, Wisconsin.
In the summer of 2014, I organized a “Universal Education Partnership” at my high school. Our club works with local organization Health by Motorbike to fundraise for our pen pals in Maasailand, Kenya and started fundraising for Girl Up once our pen pals were fully funded for the next school year! We held a Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign that raised $2,000, hosted a tie dye fundraiser, created poster petitions and met with Ron Johnson’s secretary for the Girls Count Act, and had our first mini-conference, something that we hope to make annual next year!
I also serve as a ONE Teen Leader and A World At School Global Youth Ambassador. In these positions, I have been awarded many opportunities for in-person advocacy work and forwarded petitions for #UpForSchool and the Energize Africa Act. As a ONE Teen Leader, I was able to go to Washington, D.C. in January of 2015 in order to discuss issues of global poverty with 30 other passionate youth at the State Department and World Bank. These positions help me realize the effects that we can create at home to stop global poverty —even if we’re just taking a #strengthie to show our support.
When I am not doing advocacy work or fundraising, you can find me gallivanting around in a toga as technology coordinator for the Wisconsin Junior Classical League, dancing in musicals for West High Drama, doing my oratory at speech and debate tournaments, or eating (lots of) crab rangoon.
I am so excited to be joining the Teen Advisor class this year and hope that all passionate teens will join in the global empowerment of women and girls! Thank you so much to Girl Up for this amazing opportunity.
