My name is Elina Govil. I am 17 years old and a rising senior at Indian Hill High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am thrilled and humbled to serve as a Co-Chair for the 2018-2019 class of Teen Advisors. I joined Girl Up two years ago when I attended the Girl Up Leadership Summit! Through the speakers, workshops, and lobbying on Capitol Hill, I immediately fell in love with the cause and people involved with the campaign.
Once I got back to school, I knew I had to get more people in my community involved with the cause so I started a Girl Up chapter at my school where we have led in in-district meetings, fundraisers, and awareness events.
This past year I was honored to serve as a 2017-2018 Teen Advisor where I got to work with 20 incredible girls around the world to further spread Girl Up’s mission statement. I also got to further my advocacy for the bill S. 1580- “Protecting Girls Access to Education in Vulnerable Settings Act.” My district’s Representative, Representative Chabot, introduced the bill, and I got to meet with him on Capitol Hill for a World Refugee Day event. I also wrote a co-op in my town’s newspaper about the bill to raise awareness in my community!
In addition to Girl Up, I participate in theatre, Mock Trial, choir, school newspaper, and a variety of clubs and organizations in my school and community, as well as watch rom-coms and sleep in a little too late!
Although I am soft spoken, Girl Up has helped me find my voice as a leader to fight for what I believe in! I know that I can use my voice to make a difference for girls around the world, and that I have a sisterhood backing me up!
As a Co-Chair, I am so happy to be given the opportunity to further my involvement with Girl Up and work with the new TA class to fight gender inequality. “You see a girl, I see the future!”
