Hello! I’m Carly Bandt from Shoreview, Minnesota. I am 17 years old and a senior at Mounds View High School.
I am honored to be a Teen Advisor for Girl Up because of my passion to empower girls across the globe. Last spring, I was selected as a U.S. delegate to the Girls Empowerment Seminar in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Interacting with advocates for girls from around the world showed me that girls are girls, and we can all give support to each other no matter where we reside.
My experience in Brazil inspired me to to empower young women in my own community. I am an ambassador for Youth Service America to promote my “Girl Power” group for middle school girls.
Service is also a major component of my life. I lead the Volunteer Club at my high school and am the President of the HandsOn Twin Cities Youth Advisory Board. I am also an active volunteer at many organizations in my community and won the 2013 ExCEL award for excellence in academics, athletics and leadership.
At my high school, I am captain of the Economics Club, including our nationally ranked Personal Finance Decathlon, Economics Challenge, and JA Company teams. I am also an Executive Board member of the National Honor Society, a member of the Mounds View Speech and Science Olympiad teams and a peer mentor.
One of my passions is running. I am captain of the Mounds View Cross Country and Track teams and a Junior Coach for Girls On the Run, an organization that inspires girls to be healthy and confident through running.
In the future, I hope to study international business and begin a nonprofit organization to combine my passion for economics and international issues.
I believe in the multiplier effect, which says impact can be furthered by igniting within other girls the same passion of empowerment that I possess, who then become positive agents of change through service and leadership in their own networks. I am excited to lead the Girl Up campaign as a Teen Advisor. By working together, we can change the lives of millions. High five!
