Hey everyone! My name is Alex Leone, and I am 17 years old. I live in Ewing, New Jersey and am a senior at Solebury School in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where my friend and I started a GirlUp club last year.
We are already the most highly attended and most active club at our school after only a few months!
I came across GirlUp as a middle-schooler while searching the web for organizations which support girls, and ever since then I have always wanted to get involved. My mother and grandmother raised me to be a strong, independent, confident and driven young woman, and I strive to make sure that other girls have the tools they need to develop that same sense of self-assurance and motivation.
Outside of GirlUp, I am a graduate of the Teach2Serve program, which trains high school students to become social entrepreneurs. My class implemented a tutoring/mentoring program at a local charter school where we spend a few hours every week with our elementary school pals. For my capstone project, I developed a model for an extracurricular program, which will teach adolescent girls daily living skills – fixing a flat tire, applying for a job, managing finances, etc. – that are not taught in school but are necessary for living independently. Acquiring these skills will develop independence, encourage confidence and promotes success beyond academics. I hosted a one-day “Empowering Young Women Workshop” where girls learned from local female professionals about resume/interview skills, personal finance, healthy relationships, body image, self defense, and GirlUp.
I am also a competitive Irish step dancer who loves to laugh at bad jokes and connect with friends from around the globe.
Knowing that there is so much hope and drive in young women across the world motivates me and excites me. I can’t wait to work closely with my fellow Teen Advisors to make a positive impact!
