Nigel Barker, internationally renowned fashion photographer, filmmaker, TV personality, author, humanitarian and father of two, is supporting the Girl Up as one of its champions, joining the movement to improve the lives of adolescent girls in the developing world. Nigel is best known as a photographer and judge on the show, America’s Next Top Model.
“As the father of a young daughter and son, I can attest to the undeniable power and spirit of today’s youth,” Barker said. “The unique ‘for girls, by girls’ approach of the Girl Up campaign harnesses the enthusiasm of girls in this country to help ensure every girl — no matter where she is born — is educated, healthy, safe, counted and positioned to be a part of the next generation of leaders.”
Nigel joined the campaign’s official launch in New York City and will go on to support the “Unite for Girls” tour, which travels to cities across the U.S. to activate and engage teens from coast to coast. He will also visit programs Girl Up is supporting overseas that are helping make a difference in the lives of adolescent girls.
Barker’s highly acclaimed documentary films, A Sealed Fate?, Generation Free and Haiti: Hunger and Hope, were each created for charities that are close to his heart: The Humane Society of the United States, The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and the Edeyo Foundation, to highlight some of our world’s most pressing issues. Additionally, Barker is a celebrity ambassador for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Do Something organization and campaign shooter for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.
In 2009, Nigel was honored for his film, A Sealed Fate? at the 23rd Annual Genesis Awards and the same year Barker opened a photography exhibit,Haiti: Hunger and Hope, at the Milk Gallery in New York. His work in Haiti earned him a 2010 Do Something with Style Award nomination from the VH1 Do Something Awards.
In September 2010, Nigel released his first book, Nigel Barker’s Beauty Equation: Revealing a Better and More Beautiful You. The book guides the reader through a series of self-portrait and journaling challenges, which help the reader to discover their inner beauty by building confidence and self-esteem and in turn, enhance their outer beauty.
Nigel Barker lives in New York City with his wife, Cristen and their two children Jack and Jasmine.
